I'm trying to update The Kernel in Ubuntu 9.04 from 2.6.28.15 20 2.6.31.
I've downloaded the 3 files and installed using the "sudo dpkg -i" command. Then installation appears to go well, but the new kernel dose not appear on the grub boot options menu at startup.
you may use aptitude or synaptic instead, then it will be easier to find out what's going on
Thanks, As far as I can tell, the 2.6.31 kernel is unavailable via synaptic using Ubuntu 9.04.
When I run the "grub-update" command my new kernel appears to be present and available, but does not appear on the startup grub menu. I also tried upgrading to grub2, but no Bueno.

Where did you download the 2.6.31 kernel from? You can get new Ubuntu kernels as .deb packages from the ppa repo: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
If you have successfully upgraded to grub2, you should be able to add the new kernel to grub2 by just running: sudo update-grub or sudo update-grub2.
If that does not work you can create a custom entry for the new kernel in grub2 according to this tutorial: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub2
I am still trying to get up to speed with grub2 myself.

Hey thanks man,
That was the ticket. I found the answer in the GRUB2 tutorial you referenced. I'd not completed all the steps in the GRUB2 installation. Cheers!
