Update-rc.d and Services not in Sync

Whenever I have a system and I like to disable several services from starting that are unessecary. I typically

PHP Code:
sudo services --status-all
to list the services

PHP Code:
[ ? ]  acpi-support

[ ? ]  acpid

[ ? ]  alsa-mixer-save

[ ? ]  anacron

[ + ]  apparmor

[ ? ]  apport

[ ? ]  atd

[ ? ]  aumix

[ ? ]  avahi-daemon

[ - ]  bluetooth

[ - ]  bootlogd

[ - ]  brltty

[ ? ]  console-setup

[ ? ]  cron

[ ? ]  cups
PHP Code:
$sudo update-rc.-f acpi-support remove
to removes the init scripts.

PHP Code:
[ ? ]  acpi-support

[ ? ]  acpid

[ ? ]  alsa-mixer-save

[ ? ]  anacron

[ + ]  apparmor

[ ? ]  apport

[ ? ]  atd

[ ? ]  aumix

[ ? ]  avahi-daemon

[ - ]  bluetooth

[ - ]  bootlogd

[ - ]  brltty

[ ? ]  console-setup

[ ? ]  cron

[ ? ]  cups
My problem is as you can see whenever I remove a service it almost always never reflects the changes using

PHP Code:
services --status-all
I can see the init scripts being removed but it doesnt reflect the changes via services, why?

While I do not have a specific answer to your problem, I wanted to mention that there is a tool for turning services on or off at startup on Ubuntu called sysv-rc-conf. It is in the Ubuntu repos: http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/sysv-rc-conf. It presents a list of services for each run level and it allows you to easily turn them on or off. Note that any changes made using sysv-rc-conf do not take effect untill the next boot.
I have used sysv-rc-conf on previous versions of Ubuntu and it worked pretty well in my experience.
