update manager download speed?

is it just the server is slow or really busy that it takes so long?

when it first started it tried to go at just over 100 KB/s, but as quick as i can read that on the screen. It drops to 2800 B/s, and now is at 1448 and syaing it will take well over a day to download updates. is this normal? my net book can pull youtube vids at the same time so i dont think its my connection. or is it?

That sounds weird. I have been using ubuntu daily for the last year, and never had a problem with the download speed. Was always about 1000 kb/s.

I must admit I am a regular Debian user but I would recommend installing netselect-apt. Then run "sudo netselect-apt" and it will calculate the fastest server for you. Then you can replace that name in /etc/apt/sources.list .

Ubuntu may have an easier way of doing it but this should also work fine.

Seems netselect-apt is broken in ubuntu

You can try to use synaptic
Quote:
First you need to start up Synaptic. Then go to Settings->Repositories.
Click the Download From section, and Select 'Other'
Click "Select Best Server" button to enable synaptic to find the best and fastest repository server for you.
Synaptic will perform automated pinging, and It will select the fastest server based on its calculation
