Unsuccesfull upgrade to 8.10

Hello Everyone!
i just did an upgrade from 8.04(ubuntu) to 8.10 via update manager. the upgrade process finished successfully(didn't give any errors), and computer restarted. Now when i log in it shows desktop for a second, then screen goes dark, and it brings up the log in screen again, I tried to log in more than ten times, but the same thing happens again and again. i tried the recovery mode but nothing changed. i googled around but couldn't find any solution or similar problem. any help is appreciated.Thank You

I had the same problem when installed Ubuntu 8.04 with KDE4. With KDE3 it works w/o problems but for some reason KDE4 never worked with my hardware. (Compaq Presario 4125US, AMD Athlon +3500, 2Gb Ram, ATI Radeon Express 200). This problem also reproduces after I install Compiz. Might be a videocard issue or Xorg.conf setting ???

Do you have KDE3... or KDE4?

I haven't tried 8.10, but I'll do it soon and post the result.

D,

A quick Google search reveals that many other 8.04 to 8.10 upgraders are having similar problems (many other distros in the same boat).

At the risk of suggesting the obvious, try a fresh install of 8.10.

I have been using 8.10 (from fresh) with no probs at all.

If you wish to avoid this problem in the future you could install a TRUE rolling distro, sidux based on Debian Sid.
Once you install sidux it is a simple matter of updating, upgrading and dist-upgrading. There is NEVER any need to do a fresh install.
I have a dash of Mepis 8 beta on the side (i.e. on another pc).
This triple combination of distros is the best that I have come across after trying a LOT of different Linux OSs.
That's the beauty of Linux. You can pick and mix to your heart's content or personalise your (single) distro as much as you wish.

Good luck with whatever route you choose.

I'll second what the poster ahead of me says- I've been using Ubuntu since 5.4, and a few of the upgrades have disagreed with me- mostly on the graphical front- a fresh install (keep your home directory on a separate partition) almost always does the trick.

Thank you for the update- like I said about the home directory having its own partition... if you set everything up that way all you will need to do is reinstall any after-install programs and codecs.
