Unstable DSL connection
Hi,
I am using a DSL connection which I have configured with pppoeconf.
When I install Ubuntu and I turn on the connection, there is no problem at all. But after updating the packages, something's interfering there because the then the connection stops being stable. The modem hangs up very often.
I have reinstalled Ubuntu and now it's working again correctly (no update installed yet except for SCIM -- but I guessed that didn't interfere anyway). So I am wondering what package might be the one giving me trouble in order not to install it or, if someone has encountered this, how to fix this problem if it appears...
Any ideas?

If your DSL modem supports a firmware PPPoE connection, then have your modem do the connection to the Internet.
Your PC will just get a private IP from the modem.

vmelkon is right
I have found that using a NAT'd (routed) internet connection is so much easier on a Linux box than a bridged connection.

Yes, it does make it easier. It's as if Linux is just on a LAN.
Currently, I have my router connected to the DSL modem
and it is the router's firmware that does the PPPoE connection.
I prefer it this way because I can config the router so that it allows port 80 in. I have a webserver.
The modem acts like a dummy device (not sure what else to call it)
It's possible araomai has a software issue so that's why I suggested that. Or maybe he has a line quality issue in which case the ISP can tell help you with.

Actually, I am more inclined to think it is a software issue (after package update) than a connection issue. After the initial instalation without extra packages, I set the connection with ppoeconf, and it goes perfect. It works properly and downloads the (166 in total)update packages all in a row, not falling down or anything.
The problem comes after I install the packages. Then is when I start having the problems.
Connection is supposed to start at boot, sometimes it does, sometimes it does not. Well, I believe it does but then fails. For some reason the modem halts at its own will (I see that after checking with plog).
Aghgh!!

I am afraid I am new to this. Could you let me know the procedure?
Thanks.

In my case, when I connect my PC to the modem, the modem give the IP 192.168.2.10
The modem's own IP is 192.168.2.1
I should also say that this is in reality a modem and router in one box, but the ISP calls it a modem.
So to access the modem, I put 192.168.2.1 in my browser, then I just put my username and password in the appropriate place, click on "save settings" and the modem says "I must reboot now"
I can see the lights go off and then on.
And I can surf.
I could connect any PC/Mac to it and I don't have to do anything and I can just surf.

What brand and model of modem do you have?
Most ADSL Modems on the market have their own firmware, which deals with the connection etc. Some cheap and nasty modems, such as a DLink DSL-200 require the computer to do the authentication.

Speedstream 4200
I'm quite sure all new ADSL modems you find have a firmware.
I don't know about cable modems. Anyone happen to know?
