"Unknown error" when accessing usb disks

I suddenly started to have this problem: when trying to access my usb sticks with Kubuntu 6.06, they stopped automounting (I guess). The icon for the disk doesn't appear on the desktop, and if I try to access the disk by browsing to media:/sda1, I get the error message "Unknown error".

The stick's icon is visible in konqueror when I go to media:/

I can manually mount the stick, and work with it that way, but it gets annoying.

This started happening a week or so ago, I can't remember if I updated something just before it.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Accessing USB Disks

If you upgraded HAL to version 0.5.7-1ubuntu18.2, it causes the symptoms you describe (in Kubuntu). A workaround (found in the Ubuntu Forums) is to use Synaptic to force version 18.1 . Worked for me.
