Unable to power on after latest Upgrade installed

I'm running 10.10LTS at present, I upgraded via the Upgrade Manager last night, Firefox 3.4 and D-bus stuff if I remember correctly. The system then gave the "restart now or later" buttons and I hit the "now" one. My system, an AMD 3800+ dual core job in an MSI mobo then shut down and, er... died. hitting the momentory action power switch gives an ocasional short noise but I have no power/fans or anything. It's a 480 Watt PSU with green leds and stuff I don't really need but the price was good, so I'm not convinced that it's dead... yet.

Is it possible for an upgrade to stuff the power-up circuitry? Maybe power management?

My next step is to swap the PSU to eliminate this as the "faulty" item. It leaves the Mobo, screwed CMOS and possibly the switch cabling/connector but it's all a bit suspicious. I'm basicially a hardware guy so that's the path I'm following. Unless the upgrade's written to somewhere it shouldn't???

I haven't had time to investigate further as I was dragged away shouting and screaming to a prior engagement by "she who must be obeyed".

Soadyheid.

Hmm, I would check the PSU and the motherboard itself before anything. I really don't think system updates did this to you :D

@corp769
I'm inclined to agree with you but just find it suspicious. On a "Last thing you did" basis, it's probability is higher than it should be!
I've Googled and searched both this and the Ubuntu forums and found nothing... Looks like a strip down job. I'll keep you posted :)

Ok cool. I had a similar problem like this a while back, and it was the motherboard. Out of no where, it just took a shit.... I hope this isn't it in your case :(

Most likely just a coincidence that is happened after the software update. I was doing a defrag on my window partition, and when it rebooted it was dead. First I thought somehow I had 'fried' the harddrive. I took it somewhere and found out it was a bad ram chip. I should have sent it to the Manufacturer as it was still under warranty, but I thought it was my fault, and I guess they would have balked about fixing it because I had installed linux as a dual boot. They would probably claim that voided warranty or something.

Soadyheid,
Are you still having this problem?
One easy way to rule out a bad OS, and to confirm a hardware problem, is to try booting from a live CD.

@tommcd
Er... I think to boot a Live CD you need to be able to power up the Computer... (see my original post) :rolleyes:

Thanks for taking the time to reply though ;)

I've now completed stage one of my hardware replacement; I bought a 680W PSU (special offer at Maplins) to replace the 480W "suspect"one. The Motherboard doesn't bear thinking about just now!!

I fitted the supply and, for some reason, I knew exactly what was going to happen before I hit the PowerOn button... Yup! Nothing! Zilch, Nada, Nowt! Just the same. :(
I then decided to remove the CMOS battery in case there was rubbish being held in CMOS. I put it back and when I switched on at the PSU, the fans spun up and it was looking good. I powered it back off at the PSU but it was dead again.

So... I removed the battery and it powers up from the switch on the PSU rather than the front power switch. It wanted me to run a manual fsck on the disk as it had massive faults. Well... it thought it was 2004 and the drive had 2011 all over it. Booted into the BIOS and reset the clock then it eventually came up a good 'un. I've tried replacing the CMOS battery with a new one but it's playing dead again at present. I can get in by resetting the BIOS still with no battery but have unfortunately run out of time for now. I'm on a course this week and won't be able to "play" till I get back.

I'm going to replace the original PSU, the 680W one can wait till my next project then I'll check the furchluginer front power switch!!!.

Interesting huh? remove the CMOS battery and It'll power up from the PSU's rocker switch but not with the battery in place. (OK, OK, it does it first time with the battery then it's dead)Front panel switch unknown at present due to lack of time.

Anybody else had problems like this?

[SOLVED] Unable to power on after latest Upgrade Installed

Just the final update to my problems... In the words of Sherlock Holmes (Sort of) "Once you eliminate all the possible causes, whatever remains, no matter how implausible, will be the solution."

I'd mentioned checking the switch in my last post... It happened to be perfect... But the little plastic clips holding it in to the switch housing had broken off so even though I could push the sprung button, the switch had fallen inside the housing and wasn't being pressed! :D

So there we have it, take warning all you Ubuntu types. One of the updates can break the clips holding your power switch in and disable your system!

(Now, if I just knew how to mark this as solved...)
