I'm lost on the basic situation here:
IF the system is 'dead' (won't boot), how can it 'run' any 'restore'?
Is there another computer? Is this a new install/computer? [re]Moveable disk? Or is that 'redo [pgm?]', something you boot, like the .iso I recommended?
Sorry, I can't 'picture' what's going on...
You're not the only one, and you're quite easy to understand. The OP doesn't, though. I asked all these same questions before, except the OP said I apparently didn't ask 'cheerfully' enough...we should ALL be very happy to have to ask for information from him, despite the fact the Question Guidelines and LQ Rules say differently.
That was my whole point. The OP said:
They ran dpkg and fsck. Sorry, doesn't make sense...if the system has problems booting, how are you going to run dpkg?? That's the software manager..how is that even going to do ANYTHING to repair a boot problem? Which hints at "something changed on the system". Running fsck on a damaged volume does make sense, but again, the OP won't say what options they ran it with, if it completed with error(s)/message(s), on what kind of machine (VM or physical?), using what kind of disk (JBOD? RAID? One platter only?)
They did "nothing" to cause the panic. Sorry, doesn't make sense. If the system hasn't changed, nothing was edited, etc., that only leaves "hard drive went bad" as the only cause....running fsck/dpkg/whatever, won't bring it back.
The error they posted was incomplete....who knows what the real cause was?
This is the third thread the OP has done this in. We're somehow supposed to 'know' he's talking about the same system, and know about their hardware, despite them never telling us anything about it.

@Fixit7, you seem to have formed a pattern of asking questions with very little information or details included, to a point that it is negatively impacting the ability of LQ members to help you. Please read http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...#faq_lqwelcome and make an earnest effort to improve. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly. We really do want to help you, and would like your assistance in doing so.
@TB0ne, you seem to have formed a pattern of replying to everyone of this member's threads in a way that isn't constructive. As previously noted, in some cases it is best to simply not post and use your knowledge and time on other threads. Reporting the thread so we can evaluate is an option, and it's also possible you may want to make more judicious use of the ignore system. As always, feel free to contact me if you have feedback.

I replied to this user, Fixit7, in the same way I would to ANYONE who posted without relevant details. As he is not only a long time member, but a CONTRIBUTING member as well, that gives this user no reasons not to know the "Question Guidelines", and to know they need to post details. He was insulting and rude, i.e. "you have trouble reading", "When you leave crap like this out of your messages, I will gladly answer your questions." Seriously??? We not only have to ask for details repeatedly, but when he doesn't like the WAY he's asked, he acts like a child and refuses to answer?? Is that ok?
I responded to the OP's question, asking for the details that ANYONE would need to help them. I reported the thread TWICE for the users insulting, sarcastic behavior, and for their inability to follow the guidelines. Had the OP done here what the haven't done in the past many threads (and ones I have NOT replied in as well) they've opened, and said "Here are the details/answers to the questions asked", things WOULD have been constructive. The ignore list is, to me, meaningless...burying my head in the sand for things isn't a good way to live.
@jeremy: #18 'broke my heart' when I didn't get a @Jjanel for my terrible writing-ability.
@TB0ne: see my [rambling/terrible-writing-ability] blog [about you!] here&here. TL;dr:
Ditto: Sad to see [any]Guru resources -wasted- on ...; I suggest: look for ANTs instead.
Sorry; Please excuse my intrusion here; I'll ['try' to] MindMyOwnBusiness. Thanks to all who contribute to LQ.
