Unhappy Unable to Log in GUI Mode

I have an old Acer Extensa, on which I loaded Ubuntu a while back. Upon trying to log in, I'm asked for Username/Password.
For the life of me, I can't seem to get the combo right....
I found a link @ Ubuntu Wiki, to edit GRUB, add rw init=/bin/bash to the kernel line.
Rebooted, to root shell. Here it said type passwd <username>. Set your password. Then reboot.
The problem is i do not know the <username>.
Any help in getting me to log in is much appreciated...
Many, many thanks

Do you mean you don't know your user name or you don't know Root's username (root)?

As long as you can get to a root terminal, you can always adduser joe and just create a new user named "joe". Then passwd joe. Then you can get rid of the old user name.

I just had a stroke of duh. An easy way would be to change to the /home directory and see who has a home directory. I should have thought of that sooner...
