Ubuntu won't boot properly! Kinit may be the problem?
I'm having this error message
kinit: name_to_dev_t(/dev/disk/by-uuid/a bunch of numbers)= sda5(8,5)
kinit: trying to resume from /dev/disk/by-uuid...
kinit: No resume image, doing normal boot.
Which from google searches has appeared quite a bit, however they all seem to appear when they turn on their linux computers, mine is a little different.
I have tried this about 4 times now, all with the same effect.
I'm install Ubunutu 8.04 onto an old Dell box I have, 512mb ram, Celeron processor, I certainly believe the box has enough to run ubunutu. So I install Ubuntu from the Live CD, everything goes swimmingly, installation completes, I get the heron screen, I'm even able to connect to the internet. I'm asked to restart the computer, no problem, computer will switch off and turn back on again and let me log in. The problem occurs when I then proceed to turn it off.
As soon as I press the Turn Off button in Ubuntu a black screen appears followed by
Starting Up...
Loading, Please Wait...
Kinit
kinit (Message as printed above)
kinit
Linuxbox tty1
(Linuxbox being the name of the computer)
This will sometimes flash by or stay on for about 10-15 seconds, then appears the Netork Manager messages which I have been led to believe are normal and the computer switches itself on.
From this point onwards ubunutu will no longer boot.
When i turn on my computer I get
[Black screen with]
Stage 1.5 stuff
GRUB loading please wait
[new black screen with]
Starting up.. please wait
That disappears and it sounds like it's loading, I get the loading circle thing of Ubuntu and then my monitor seems to make the sound it makes when turning off and nothing will ever appear. I have tried on a second monitor and still nothing appeared on that either.
So that is my problem, I am fully baffled, I am very much a newbie just getting into playing around however I've tried this process with 2 different Live CD's, different RAM, different HDDs, different monitors all to no avail.
Having just done the process I hear the processor fan kick off every now and then, it sounds like it is running but there is nothing but a black screen.
There may be an easy answer to all this but I certainly don't know it, any help will be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks
Steve Cordon
