Hmmm. I don't think both ath5k and ath_pci should both be loaded for this wireless. Let's try blacklisting them one at a time and see what happens.

Nano is probably the easiest console editor to use:

cd /etc/modprobe.d
sudo nano blacklist

On a line in that file put:

blacklist ath5k

Then do Ctrl-X and Yes to save it. Then reboot and recheck with 'lsmod | grep ath' to be sure you do not have ath5k. Then try iwconfig to see if there is something besides those 3 you got before. And also check your network configuration program in administration to see if wireless is listed. It might need to be enabled.

The next step if this doesn't help will be to edit that file again and change the ath5k to ath_pci so that only ath5k loads. Then repeat the checking sequence.

In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, just remove the line:

blacklist ath5k

'blacklist ath_pci should be there.

My - The ath5k is the latest/greatest (except for the ath9k) driver, intended to support all the Atheros AR5??? series. It uses the ath_pci kernel module to access devices on the PCI bus, so that module is required by the ath5k one. Thus both should be loaded for the default system to work.

The only "fly in the ointment" is if your specific hardware requires the use of the hardware abstraction layer (ath_hal) module to install the "microcode" for the AR542? series chip-set. That "fly" will usually only be in your "ointment" if you "ointment" is made from 64-bit hardware.

Look a the MadWiFi site for details.

Im really perplexed as to why he's having such an issue with it. I've set that device up numerous times on my machines, and helped others w/ their machines, and never an issue...

Go Figure. Good news is, I downloaded a Jaunty 9.04 alpha cd the other day, and it looks like the device is gonna work out of the box in Jaunty.

Maybe he did not try what you suggested. If he hasn't tried that, I would suggest that he remove those entries in blacklist and do what you said. I don't have his card or the same version of ubuntu; so you are better qualified, for sure.
