I just purchased a copy of Ubuntu User, Issue 11. As with another British Linux Magazine, there is no date on it, so I cannot tell how old it is.
The double-sided DVD that came with it has Ubuntu 11.10 on one side and Kubuntu on the other side. I can test Ubuntu and the Unity desktop, but Kubuntu requires a username and password which are not supplied in the magazine.
Can anyone tell me the publication date, username and password?
The first time I tried Kubuntu, I started the "Try Kubuntu" option and went on to other things. When I came back to it, the screen was blank. Moving the mouse gave me the desktop with a small window giving various quit options. I chose to continue and got the login request.
I just tried it again to test the username/password combos above, and there was no username/password request, neither initially nor from the blank-screen power saving mode.
It occurred to me to check the file dates on the disc. The most recent date in /usr/bin is October 18, 2011. It has just arrived on the Newsagent's shelves this week.
It is *very* annoying that they do not date their publications. Perhaps they feel they would not sell as many copies if people knew how out-of-date they were.
Wierd. Sounds like some sort of defect with the feature that locks the screensaver, or it could have been some sort of random error at boot. I'm surprised that the magazine did not have the date on it, but it can only be October, November, or December.
