Is there a telnet server active on that IP address? Check that first...no server, no service,

And...welcome to the forum!

Okay...I guess both are active on the same box (not an ideal situation to learn networking, granted) okay, this is what we'll try: find out the IP addresses for ***dows (where the VirtualBox run is, I guess) and Ubuntu, here's how:

for Linux enter

Quote:
ifconfig
in the console, for the other one
Quote:
ipconfig
in the command box...

Next, try to ping from one to the other:

Quote:
ping [i.p.address.here] an exaple ping 192.168.1.1
See if something comes back.

You could (optionally) test the networks as well, try to ping the loopback:

Quote:
ping 127.0.0.1
and see if there's something echoing back...
