I am trying to get Ubuntu Studio running on a computer I built myself, but it takes literally 15 minutes to boot up (not exaggerating) and runs incredibly slowly. I'm running an Intel Pentium 4 (Don't know the speed off the top of my head) with 1 1/2 GB of RAM, and a 30GB hard drive. When I installed it I set the Swap file to the maximum 1.7GB and dedicated the rest to storage. Would anyone know why it runs so slowly? I'm thinking of replacing the motherboard and processor in case that is it. Would anyone have any advice there as well? Would post technical details but I wouldn't know what to look for.

I've not [yet] used Ubuntu Studio (waiting on a new computer). Regardless, while it's booting & you get the "ubunutu" logo, hit cntl-F1 to drop to the shell. I'm guessing it's hanging on a certain step. What step is that? I would guess that some system isn't working properly or isn't configured properly - USB, Firewire, your sound card, something like that.

Thanks for the help. I tried the ctrl+f1 thing you suggested but nothing happened. I don't think it's a specific step that's hanging because the startup screen doesn't stop at all, it just runs really slowly.

sorry, that should have been cntl-alt-f1.

I'm installing Ubuntu Studio this week. If I encounter anything astonishingly new about the bootup, I'll come back, otherwise, give cntl-alt-f1 a shot. Nothing should take 15 minutes to boot if it's functioning properly and at least somewhat modern.
