Ubuntu slow to no loading of web pages

After much reading and searching I need help with this problem Iam having. I have Ubuntu loaded on my laptop it has recognized my wireless card and loaded updates and upgrades ....but when I go to different sites they are slow to no loading...Iam on DSL with a Actiontec DSL Modem with Wireless Gateway.....My wireless card is a D-Link DWL-650....even being plugged in with a ethernet cable it is slow...Iam talking about minutes to load if they do load....I also have Fedora Core 1 on a PC with the same ethernet cable and the pages load fast...so if anyone could help I would appreciate it....Or send me in the right dirrection....Thank You Installer36....

Anything wrong with sticking with Fedora? I happen to love Ubuntu (it's my primary OS), but if the internet was slow on it, and I couldn't figure out how to fix it, I'd ditch it in a second. Maybe try using Fedora Core 4, instead of FC1...

Fedora did not recoginze my wireless card..nor di Mandrake , suse , or redhat.... I will keep it on my PC ... so I can learn more...Thanks Installer36

Re: Ubuntu slow to no loading of web pages

Are you using ndiswrapper or a native driver? Ndiswrapper was painful on my last laptop but my new machine has a native driver. I'd strongly recommend buying a pcmcia card that has native linux support...some of them are cheap and it's a big difference.

suggestion for wireless card

Just a suggestion, I've just installed a Belkin F5d700UK ver 3 on an Ubuntu box. This has a ralink chipset which uses the native rt2500 linux driver (about £20) I installed this according to the following instructions:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Rt2500WirelessCardsHowTo

But left out the section on RAconfig - Ubuntu Hoary doesn't need this. Really easy and works great.

Thank You for the suggestions ..Iam not using Ndis my card was recognized at the install..it works but not effiecently...What Iam going to do is try the Ralink driver install because I do have a card bus that it listed there...Now all I have to do is reinstall ubuntu because in frustration last night I reloaded xp....What I dont understand is that when I do updates or apt-get something it is fast but when I go to say something.com it is unbearably slow loading...well thank you once again ....Installer36

Sounds like a DNS-related problem then. I'd take a look at what servers are getting put into /etc/resolv.conf and make sure that they are alive. I've had problems with that before.

Mlonker I will try this out and see first I need to relinstall . If I get a response like "search domain.acmp name server 192.178.0.1 name server 275.171.3.65 " does this mean I should be good to go and if not how do I choose a different DNS ? Well will see soon enough...Thanks all Installer36

Are those the right numbers for your ISP?

If you want to edit the file then su to root, type vim resolv.conf, i to begin editing, and then :wq to save and exit.

The resolv.conf file gets rewritten every time that the dhcp client (dhclient) runs, so changes to that file are only temporary. If the numbers are wrong then they should be permanently fixed on your router, by your ISP, whatever.

No those numbers are not right I didnt know if I should post the real out put of that...But right now it doesnt matter...I finally got my Ubuntu cd I ordered and reinstalled with no internet when I rebooted I put the card in and it seems to be working...Hopefully this is the end of it...It did make me read alot of posts so once again Thank You...Installer36
