Ubuntu screen noise and crash on startup


I got ubuntu installed and booted it up, all was well and I was able to enter my username and password. When It goes to the next screen however, it freezes, and the bar with "Ubuntu" on it gets distorted. Has anyone seen this?

Hi,

Similar problem. Just installed Ubuntu yeasterday. The whole instalation went very smoothly, but wen finished I could not see a thing just distorted screen. I was not even able to log in.

Any idea what went wrong? I seem to have a problems with several distros. Fedora doesn't even start the installation in tex mode or lowres.
