Ubuntu rattling along like an old train

Hi,

Ubuntu's great for me, but has gone all rattly - hard disk rattling away everything v. slow - Firefox, Open Office and the desktop - which says it's Xfce/Xubuntu 9.10 - but I know we upgraded to 10.04 LTS.

The system monitor always shows around 50% RAM (240MiB of 480 MiB) and swap at 11% (106 MiB of 949 MiB)

I've attached (?) a top output, which means nothing to me

Any ideas

Thanks

Mini

I could only see the Firefox consuming 25% of the total memory.
Have you done a upgrade OR fresh install of 10.04LTS?
If you have upgraded by # apt-get upgrade {or whatever}, then there are always chances to get a few things broken, especially in case of Ubuntu.

Something called 'plug-in container' consistently (in your text file) is using a lot of the memory. Now I don't exactly know plug-in container, but it sounds like a firefox system for managing plug-ins. Have you checked that firefox is up-to-date and that any plug-ins that you are using are updated to the appropriate level for your browser?
