ubuntu post install
Hello!
I have been rying Kubuntu 5.10 and I have to say that it did pretty well in configuring most of it, but there ae still things I need to install.
I initially tried sarge on this laptop but it looks like the kernel 2.6.8 had trouble with ACPI on my hardware so usb wouldn't work etc ..
On Kubuntu this is just fine. A few thing though:
1- what about codecs, dvd playback support such as libdvdcss ...?
I have uncommented ubuntu reps on initial sources.list and but couldn't find them?
Should I include debian reps in the sources.list ? what about the risk of packages that would be in both ubuntu and debian reps ?
2- my usb mouse was detected and seems to work except that there is an irritating inertia. what could be the reason? the
settings on xorg.conf and kde are same as in my previous debian install.
3- what about quicktime, flash, java etc ...for firefox where do I get them?
Thanks foryour help!

In answer to questions one and two, try looking at this page http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu#Wh...r_new_programs. In particular make sure to install Automatix as it makes it very easy to install the things you mentioned. I think it's aimed at Ubuntu but i think it should all work for Kubuntu too.

I prefer http://robotgeek.org/blog/easybreezy/ over Automatix but both work very well ... more personal preference than anything

Either of the applications mentioned here should do the job just fine.

To briefly cover the "why" of the post-install process, Ubuntu is dedicated to being a totally free distribution. As such, it does not include any software that doesn't fall under the right license. DVD playback software is of questionable legal standing in the States, and other packages may well just not be 'standard fare' - so following the above advice will give you access to them, but Ubuntu isn't liable for any problems that crop up because of it.
Small price to pay, IMHO.
