Ubuntu on Celeron
 

I attempted to install Ubuntu on a Celeron machine but failed.

I tried both 8.04 and 8.10 versions that I have used in my Intel machine. Both reach a certain point where it regresses to a non-graphic screen with some early boot messages and there freezes.

Is the problem my Intel version of Ubuntu, or is there some specific problem with Celeron machines?

I don't think it has anything to do with the CPU (I use Celerons myself without any kind of problem) but probably something else in the setup. Try a live CD without X (e.g. Finnix) and paste the output of lspci here, please.

Apart from that, maybe some part of your hardware is damaged - let's hope that's not the case...

Maybe it is the graphics card, did you try with compatibility mode?

I had this same problem with ubuntu 7.10 but it got solved in 8.04 and 8.10 and the problem was my graphics card.

That's why I advised to boot without X ;)

As you can see i posted 3 seconds after you and i didnt see your post! (Please dont kill me ;) ).

What i meant was to try the compatibility mode in the boot menu (it is right at the ubuntu disk, no need for another distro) and he can also try to load with the vesa display driver with this option :

We just can't be sure what causes the freezes yet (the systems was installed somehow - how?) - and Finnix (for example) boots a minimal system without a lot of drivers that may cause problems, that's why I'd rather use something like that (SystemRescueCD's very handy, too) to assess the problem.

But your idea should be tried first - maybe it's really that trivial (some proprietary driver missing?).

Thanks for the many responses. What seems to be a bit strange is that the PC is running Windows 2k presently. But the live CD of Ubuntu would not run. My idea was to have Ubuntu format the disk and be the only system.

Yes, there must be something incapatible, but for the moment have little idea.

Anyway, now that I know the problem is not Celeron, I have something to work with.

Ah, okay, this sounds a bit different! Try r1d3r's idea by hitting "Further Options" (F6, if I'm not mistaken) or boot "failsafe" with the Ubuntu live CD - or use something like Finnix to determine which hardware you're using. You can even use WinDoze for that purpose ;)
