Ubuntu on an Xbox?

Has anyone tryed running Ubuntu on an xbox? I just found out the other day that the xbox can do this and I can't wait to try..

You cannot run ubuntu on an xbox, but you can run debian(which is what ubuntu is based on)

:( that sucks.

:newbie:

why would you want to run Ubuntu on an xbox anyways, there is a perfectly good distro of linux that runs natively on the xbox, I believe its debian based. But experimentation with new distros on new hardware is always cool

Michael Robertson (CEO of Linspire) was the one who put up his money for the X-box Linux Project. Thought some might find that interesting.

i find it hillarious, he is the CEO of a company that directly defies microsofts hold, and then desides to throw up a large sum of money to an organization working to load linux on a microsoft gaming system... he's basicly telling microsoft what he thinks of them.

Dirty_Ink 05-09-2005 05:38 PM

Supposivly though it never really worked as well as they wanted, but their close.

it could be possible to port any distro to xbox but it would take alot of work =/

liquidtenmilion 05-09-2005 07:04 PM

well the xbox uses a plain old 686 celeron processor, so any distro can work on it. The only problem is the xbox bios is really, really crap(well to run linux anyway), so the hardest part of porting a distro to the xbox would be dealing with the stupid bios.

Dirty_Ink 05-09-2005 07:28 PM

I can see it being a really cheap PC, but how usable would the Distro be?

so I've looked into this, and getting linux onto the xbox without a modchip is officially a pain in the ass. Splicing usb wires and getting special saves onto the mem-chip that allows for you to use code that M$ messed up on that allows Linux to be on their precious box.

There are people online that will send you an xbox with linux already on it, kinda takes the fun out of hardware hacking by doing that, but if you want an xbox with linux, then thats one way to go.

A simple usb to xbox adapter can be found at www.lik-sang.com along with all kinds of crazy crap for videogames.

njoi!

As soon as my usb adapter comes in, i'm going to try it.

cerealdaemon 05-10-2005 04:04 PM

sweet action man, let us know how that turns out for you, I've got an xbox lying around that I'd like to put linux on as well, it would be nice to hear how your experience goes and all that jazz....

liquidtenmilion 05-10-2005 04:27 PM

if you don't mind not being able to play games, you can turn it into a full pc, that has complete access to the internet, can run X with kde or gnome(or whatever DE/WM you want) and can run any program/game/can connect any hardware that linux supports.

Although all i really use my xbox for is emulation(through the linux versions of Zsnes epsxe and gens)

It's also my media player too.

chrisstooss 05-12-2005 05:31 PM

So Ubuntu will not support xbox?
