Ubuntu on a P2 with 64meg of RAM
I've just loaded Ubuntu 5.04 onto an old COMPAQ ARMADA laptop (a P2 with 64meg of RAM) BTW This is only my number 3 machine.
I'm very pleased with the install....which worked beyond my expectations for this old dog, even picking up my netgear wireless card :D As expected its running very slooooooooooow..................so I've ditched Gnome for a much leaner Fluxbox. can I ask if anyone has any further resource saving ideas? This box is just being used for wireless surfing in the garden during this pleasant (but probably brief) British summer!! |
general tips include
closing down services that u do not require if u are comfortable with compiling a kernel then compile a kernel for ur machine regards |
There are other distros that might be more suited for your box. Distrowatch has many listed. You could also try to run a thin client if you have other systems running too.

after cutting down on running services and running fluxbox for gui, i have it running on a Pmmx with 32mb ram, so yes you can :D

Have you taken a look at this?

Thanks all for some useful tips....
I've got a fairly good working system now on this machine. I've also been making use of different run level configurations to only start/load services required when appropriate. |
