ubuntu not recognizing external usb hdd

Hi all,

I am running ubuntu linux and have a problem regrding my external usb hdd. Ubuntu has not detected it. Im wondering how I can go about getting ubuntu to automatically detect it and set it up OR how to manually set it up myself.

Thanks to everyone who read/replied to my query.

Thanks,

Dan.

Hmmm... is the USB disk detected on other operating systems?

Not sure if this is your problem, but just thought i'd let you now before you spend a lot of time on this.

I once spent a week trying to get my USB disk recognized by linux, only to discover later that the problem was with the jumper settings on the disk. The disk was set to 'slave' by default, and that was causing the problem. It seems hard disks don't work reliably if the jumper is not on 'master', when connected to USB. Changing the jumper position obviously did the trick.

Yep, the usb external hdd works perfectly in windows xp environment. Basically to give ya a bit of background,... I origonally partitioned my 40gb hdd on my laptop. I put ubuntu on 1 part and windows xp on the other. In ubuntu, I had no problems with my external hdd then but I couldnt access the internet through my wireless card. So,.. I erased my entire hdd and just setup windows xp. I got vmware workstation to allow me to run ubuntu within the workstation within windows xp. As a result of this, my internet was now working through the wireless card. However, now my external hdd isnt. And that is where i am at now.
