Ubuntu not displaying correct resolution

my ubuntu machine, a fresh install of 5.10 will only display a 1024x768 resolution. my laptop is natively 1280x800. /etc/X11/xorg.conf says the only screen resolution is 1280x800, but ubuntu will only display 1024x768.

anybody know what/s going on?
