Ubuntu logs on, then logs back off

I recently did an update using the built in updater to the newest kernel. I am not sure if this had anything to do with it or not. But anyways, i logged off my ubuntu account and was going to log back in. I typed in my user/pass and it acted like it was going to log in(stayed on the brown background), but then suddenly the screen went black after about 15 seconds then went back to the login screen. Someone on the official ubuntu forums said to see if i had any free space and i verified that i do have free space.

Any suggestions

I am using 5.10
Im on a laptop with an Athlon 64 3400+
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
1Gb of pc3200 ram

Crap i just saw Paul2005's post....Sorry
