Ubuntu live cd and internet issues
Hello, I am trying to use the Ubuntu LiveCD (5.04) but there is a small issue. I can't connect to the internet (I have a dialup connection) by using the graphical tool since it does not support disabling "wait for dial tone before dialing". Which configuration file should I change and which line should I modify to get it working?
Thanks |
Dialup and Hoary is interesting.
I got mine going by editing wvdial.conf (I had to create it) and invoking from the commandline. You have a dialup connection with no dialtone? |

If anyone else has the same problem insert the "ATX3" string into an init field of wvdial.conf (you can create it by typing "wvdialconf") and it should work fine. |

I didn't mean to be insulting... or whatever... Let me explain... You can work around your problem by editing the wvdial.conf file and invoking it directly - as you have stated in post #3. The X3 flag is in addition to the manual - well done. If people would like to understand what they are doing by following your advise, then the man pages are most helpful. If they do not mind doing things they don't understand, then they'll disregard the message. The note was included because many people will assume that the man pages will be too horribly technical to understand. I would like to disabuse them of this notion in this particular case. A common problem running wvdial scripts comes from wvdial being too smart: some folk have to tell it to be stupid. Wether or not you need to do this, in addition to disabling "wait for dialtone", I don't know. I was directing this to "some folk" who may have searched into this thread with a similar problem where this may be relevant. As a public forum, it is sometimes a good idea to remember that others will be reading this - perhaps years down the line. Perhaps I'm just being over-pedantic. Ho-hum... peace. |

I totally agree with you. The point is not only to help new users migrate to Linux but to teach them the Linux philosophy as well :) |
What About Internet on 5.10 LIVE CD?
I've read that Internet on Hoary can be tricky, but I run Badger (5.10).
When it boots, I see the configure DHCH dialog, but it does not connect to my ISP. Tried configuring my Ethernet to use DHCP and still get nothing. Any tips on how to configure DSL? Thanks -s |
WvDial and Desktop?
hi! first-time post from someone who has just changed to ubuntu linux...
i got my dialup connection working in ubuntu, using WvDial... the PPP/Modems interface on the ubuntu desktop didn't work for me because i have to use the option "do not wait for dialtone". now i open a terminal window, type wvdial, and it connects. my question: how can i do this from the desktop environment, ie without having to open a terminal window and typing? ideally i would like to have an icon that i can click on the status bar, where the clock is. (or how can i modify the icon that shows the transmission on the PPP link, in the top right corner, such that i can click on it to connect and disconnect the dialup, using the wvdial settings?) thanks for advice! best wishes - . . . Launcher
Right click on the desktop, and click create launcher. Put in whatever name you want then put the command in the command box check the run in terminal box, and you should be ready to go. You might have to create 2 icons if you have different commands to connect and disconnect.
