Question Ubuntu Linux And Wifi(Wireless)

How do I connect to my home network(802.11b)
using Ubuntu 6.10?
My HP KAYAK XU/550X has 550MHz Pentium III XEON
processor, 80GB drive and 766MB ram.
I have a HP KAYAK XU/550X running Ubuntu 6.10 and Windows XP.
Can I install and connect my
USB LinkSYS Wireless-B (Model WUSB11v4) Network Adapter?
How do I install and connect this Network Adapter?

Do you have any suggestions?
Thank You
Bob Whitman

I don't have a USB wireless device, but when a friend plugged his USB wireless device into my computer running Ubuntu, the hotpug system did its magic and the connections the device was detecting were displayed when I clicked on the nm-applet (looks like two terminals, but beware there is a different optional applet that you can add which looks similar) in the notification area (near the clock). Of course, YMMV depending on the device. I am not sure of the make/model of the wireless device.

Before you try anything complicated, I would suggest just plugging the device in and see if the nm-applet displays the connections it sees.

One of the first things you are going to want to do is add the restricted and universal repositories to synaptic... Then install as much of the wifi stuff as you can...

I find the KDE wifi stuff better than the Gnome or XFCE stuff. Kwlan is my app of choice for configuring and loading wifi on the laptop.

Hello,

In order for your WUSB11v4 to work, you most likely need to use ndiswrapper, which is easy nonetheless. Here's how to do it (I'm doing this the easy way, since I take it that you are a begginer, sorry if you aren't):

1. Make sure you have ndiswrapper installed, (The easiest way for this to work for you, is to use Synaptic, so pop the Ubuntu CD in your drive, and let it start the package manager program called Synaptic), after it has loaded up, find ndiswrapper package, wine package and also install the wireless-tools package.

2. Now, download ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/WUSB11v4_08272004.exe You can extract that with the wine program, these are the drivers you will be using, they are WinXPee drivers, which is basically what the purpose of ndiswrapper is, to use Windows drivers and utilize them for Linux hardware drivers.

3. After you have those in a directory that you know, open up a terminal. In the terminal, use the 'cd' command to the move to the 'Drivers' directory. Then type:

Code:
sudo ndiswrapper -i WUSB11v4.inf
4. Now something good should have happened, check to see if the hardware was recognized, type:

Code:
sudo ndiswrapper -l
It will tell you if that inf file was recognized with the hardware, if it was, then you're basically done, just open up Networking, under the Menu Bar, and try to config it in there, if something didn't work with that, restart and try again.(Sorry for not being accurate, I'm not running GNOME). If it wasn't even recognized in the ndiswrapper -l, then I'm not sure.
