Ubuntu Jaunty doesn't recognize my DVD player, but Dapper did

I have given more details of the problem at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/81027

Basically, I have two drives: a CD-RW and a DVD player. Every thing worked in Dapper, but when I upgraded to 8.04, the DVD drive disappeared. Now I am updated to Jaunty and I still can't find the drive.

However, if I put an system install CD in the DVD drive, it recognizes it and begins to install it. So there must be a driver somewhere.

Thanks for any help.

OK, your DVD is not in fstab and it does not appear in lshw.
There is some concern that you have only a partial upgrade - what have you done to check?

lets see if there is any mention of anything dvd in the syslog:

dmesg | grep dvd

No DVD

Thanks for your interest. Dmesg doesn't give anything for dvd. My model is a Samsung SD-608 and there are all sorts of files on it, but it is not in my fstab.

"Upgrades" with the 'buntus are flaky at best, and it seems you went from 8.04 to 9.04 without going through 8.10.

I don't think this was a good idea.

My suggestion: Backup your home while you still have access to your PC. Do a clean install of 9.04, then restore your personal data.

No dvd

The problem started when I upgraded from Dapper to 8.04. The dvd was already missing.

I completely re-installed Windows and then re-installed 9.04 wiping out windows. I had to use the alternative installation because the desktop Ubuntu(8.04 or 9.04) always gives a "Busy Box", "intramfs", message.

I have a Samsung SD-608 dvd player and have looked for firmware which I didn't find.
