Ubuntu installer doesn't detect SATA but Fedora does

I've got 2 500Gb SATA drives and I can't install Ubuntu on them. Fedora 7 picks them up no problem, but the Feisty installer only gives me the option for manual configuration (not automatic) and then doesn't detect any devices.
I'm running a Dual Core AMD 6000 if that's got anything to do with it.

Thanks in advance
Adam

jmicron chip maybe - if so you'll need a (very) recent kernel.
Perhaps try the 7.10 beta might be worth trying.

Gutsy picks them up alright but with it being a beta, will I be alright doing an upgrade to the final release or will I be required to do a clean install? I know a clean install will probably be better.

No idea - maybe, maybe not. As I'm running it on a test box, I'll probably do a clean install regardless.

I believe the alternative install CD works better with SATA, RAID, etc. You might want to try that and see how it works for you.

Gutsy will be released in full in a matter of a week or so... You may want to hold out until then and install... (Personally, I've been quite pleased with the beta, and I'm expecting that once the final is released, the system should be able to an update to the final code without a full reinstall...)

I notice that (now ???) you can do an upgrade from Feisty to the beta, so you'd have to be pretty confident the update manager would handle the final roll-out.
