nVidia, TwinView & Ubuntu
Hello,
I was wondering if someone here has the Ubuntu Hacks book and could help me with some text out of the book. I heard that the book has an excellent section on getting Dual Displays working in Ubuntu. Would it be possible for someone to post, not the complete text of that section, but just the xorg.conf entries? If what I'm asking is out of the question or illegal in any way, please disregard this thread. Moderators may go ahead and lock and/or delete this thread at will.
Thanks in advance.

You dont need that book. Its real easy. Just install nvidia (no open source) drivers. Then execute the command: nvidia-xconfig --twinview. It does it all for you.

Awesome! Thanks. Now I have to tweak xorg.conf a bit. In Windows, the DVI connection is the main display and the image expands to the VGA connection. They are both LCDs capable of 1280x1024x24 at 75Hz.
DVI LCD is left of VGA LCD. I probably just have to play with this line:
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "LeftOf"

Yeah its even easier than that once you have your drivers instelled: go into X open a term and type nvidia-settings and you will get a nice control pannel for tweaking colours display orientation etc just like you do in windows.

Thanks for bringing that up. I ran in a terminal: sudo nvidia-settings and can't change any orientation related stuff in there. I'll take a screenshot and post it. It's like something is missing.

Here is what my nvidia-settings box looks like:
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/7...ettingsjt2.gif
Even when I click on 'Display Devices', I still don't get any options for TwinView.
I opened it with the command 'sudo nvidia-settings'. If I do it without sudo, it shows less options.

LOL
From man nvidia-settings:
TODO
There are many things still to be added to nvidia-settings, some of
which include:
- configurability of TwinView (NVIDIA is planning to implement
this)
- configurability of multiple X screens (NVIDIA is planning to
implement this)
I'll stop chasing my tail now.

I did a little more self-tail chasing but on IRC this time. Someone there told me that TwinView configuration was not available until version 9xxx of the nvidia driver. He pointed me to a repo that had a more updated version for Dapper and now I have a TwinView configuration option when nvidia-settings is open.

Yeah your best bet is to download the latest of nvidia.com. Good Luck.

Ok, I would really like for my dual LCD setup to behave like it does in Windows. I'm beginning to think that Windows gives priority to the DVI connection while Linux prioritizes the VGA connection.
If turn off TwinView, then the DVI connected LCD is the main display. When TwinView is on, the VGA connected LCD becomes the main display. By that I mean the display that shows the taskbars and everything by default. Somehow in nvidia-settings I got the DVI LCD to display the way I want but it's not sticking. After a logoff and login, it's back to other way.

Strange fo rhtat to happen. I have a CRT (Connected via VGA) and an LCD (DVI) and when I boot windows, it feeds the vision thru the VGA, then the DVI, making my CRT the main screen. When I boot Linux (either Ubuntu or fedora) it feeds the vision thru the DVI to the LCD. Becoz I dont have my twinview set up properly (yet), I can tuse my CRT when in Linux -- this is just a case of needing to read a bit more to get it going!
