Question Ubuntu Feisty Automounts USB Hard Drives with Permissions for Root Only

I'm running Ubuntu Feisty. When I plug in a USB hard drive, the computer automounts it, but it is mounted with owner 'root', group 'root', etc. My user cannot write to it. Flash memory sticks, however, are mounted normally so that I can read/write to them.
This problem occurs whether the disk is formatted as ntfs, fat32, or ext3.
I have the "Access external storage devices automatically" checkbox in the Users & Groups administration dialog checked.

How can I fix this?

I think you need to look into 'writing UDEV rules', because as I recall, on Ubuntu/Debian, the /etc/fstab file does not have much/anything to do with USB devices.
You would want a UDEV rule telling the machine how/what permissions to mount the drive, so that users can access it.

You can always try editing the relevant line in your /etc/fstab: replace the fourth item ("defaults") with
rw,user,noauto

I think this will involve udev rules. More learning to do, I guess. Nobody here or on the Ubuntu forums seems to have solved this problem - I've had messages in both places now for days.

I think Ubuntu doesn't handle USB devices through fstab.
