Ubuntu Edjy Eft Lag

Hello,
I am experiencing some problems with ubuntu.
I have ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) and it is running kind of slow.

When I drag windows around, maximize windows, or scroll, it lags and moves very slowly.
My computer is a Compaq Presario SR2020NX, and can run vista without any problems, so I don't think that the problem is with the hardware.
The same problem happens with kubuntu and xubuntu.
Other linux distros, like mandriva, run fine.

Does anyone know what I should do?

Open a terminal and find what process is eating your CPU.

$ top
<q> to quit

Try installing the proprietary Nvidia or ATI drivers.

I have found that this tends to help with lag when moving windows, etc.

I got the NVIDIA driver, and everything works perfectly
