Ubuntu CDs | Why just 1
 

As I made my virtual journey to Ubuntu website's download section, I could only find 1 CD (700MB) for download.

My question is, how come Ubuntu come in just 1 CD when Fedora, openSuSE comes in ~4GB DVDs?

Does this mean after installing Ubuntu, I need to spend a lot of my bandwidth downloading software I want to use individually?

No .....you can download the dvds too. They update things so rapidly, that it is better to get the CDs.

I found ubuntu installation very simple, easy and the OS is very light. It doesn't take ages to boot the OS like fedora or SUSE. Also, in the 1 Ubuntu OS CD, you will get most of the applications required to run as a desktop machine so i don't see any reason why you should have a 4GB DVD for this! :)

I could not find any DVD for download at ubuntu website :(

Get the CD, thats the base of ubuntu, and some other programs aswell.

Does you insisting on a DVD rather than the CD mean you rather want to spend your bandwidth on a 4GB DVD instead of 700 MB plus some packages you will not find on it?
You will have to download lots of updates with eighter one anyway - it has been a while since Hardy was released and the CD as well as DVD will have the original versions still...go for the CD.

The CD is all you need - as with any ditro the reality is that you just need the basics and the rest can be easily obtained via downloads.

The Ubuntu repositories are very useful.

Anyone using Ubuntu will generally start with the Synaptics package manager and search for any software there that they might need. There generally is some sort of program waiting for you.

the main difference between the 1 cd and dvd is that the cd is the bassic so once you installed the bassic you use the repository to get the rest of what you want if your new computer doesnt have internet but its more like a private network so then the dvd has all the extra programe that you would get from the net
(even fedora you can get a 1 cd install and you will use the internet to get the rest of the program you want. )

so why get a dvd wen anyway you will have to make update so go for the cd 100% its all you need that why ubuntu doesnt offer the dvd option , cause its based for home user so if they download it for home there is 90% of the chances that they will use the net anyway so no need the extra package in a dvd.
