Ubuntu and gnome3
How much hassle is it to really install Gnome3 on a Ubuntu 12.04 installation? I've done some google searches but none are conclusive on this. Some say that the official Ubuntu repositories is not fully up to date.

Just install the gnome shell package. It's up to date (Gnome 3.4) for right now.

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
That is all you have to do to install Gnome Shell and Classic (Fallback mode) Gnome. This will install Gnome 3.4 so it is up to date as of now. Once it is installed just log out. On the login screen click on the Ubuntu icon by your name and select what you want to log into. Then enter your password and you will be logged in to the Gnome Desktop.

There's also a gnome shell spin if you want to install Ubuntu with gnome shell and no aspects of unity. Also there are a few really slick looking ubuntu-based distros featuring gnome shell in development like pinguy os and luninux.
