Ubuntu - ALL FINE NOW! - Megathread

The other night, I tried to install some software to impress my friends the other day. I realized that it wasn't working. Adept got stuck on "Waiting for headers". I thought a reinstall might solve the problem, but that was a bad idea. Now it's stuck on "Configuring apt". I was just wondering if my internet connection's gone sour. Maybe the ISP is an anti-Linux plotter. Or maybe the repos are down. So is anyone else having this problem?

They appear to be down. For me it's archive.ubuntu.com and security.ubuntu.com. Oh, and I can't get to ubuntu.com via port 80 either.

I was planning to switch my main linux machine from Suse 10.1 to Ubuntu this weekend, but it looks like I picked the wrong time! I've never had this happen with another distro, but I hope this isn't an ongoing issue. When the servers were working I was very impressed. Yesterday when I couldn't get the sources to refresh I went to the ubuntu web site and found some alternate repositories. This was on my test machine, but when I went to pull this up this morning to install on my main machine I found that I can't even access the main ubuntu site (as was said above).

Bummer! All backed up and no place to go!

I've used Ubuntu on and off for about a year now and steadily for the past month and this is the first time that I recall this repository thing ever happening. And I agree with you, aside from this I am VERY impressed.

P.S. I just have this little mounting issue that I can't seem to solve...

I've been using Ubuntu on one machine or another for almost two years and have never seen the sites and repositiories down before. Anyone know of any mirrors?

Wow, I can't get to ubuntu.com, ubuntuforums.org, or canonical.com. Did Mark not pay his ISP bill this month?

Ubuntu - site, forums, repositories - Down

Hi
I have 3 computers a, b & c connected to surge protectors.

a: is a few months old compaq with 2 drives
b: is a few years old compaq with 2 drives
c: is a few decads old no-name with 2 drives.

a: had Kubuntu 6.06 on drive1, Kubutu 5.10 on drive2
b: had Windows ME on drive1, Kubuntu 6.06 on drive2
c: had Kubuntu 6.06 on both drives.

Before I went away for a few days, I turned the computers off, but left the surge protectors on.

When I returned.
a: drive1 ok, drive2 had errors on booting
b: when turned on, "no hard drives found" message came up
c: drive1 had errors, drive2 not found.

a: installed Kubuntu 6.06 on drive2 - ok
b. installed Kubuntu 6.06 on both drives. problems on both
c. installed Kubuntu 6.06 on both drives - ok.

Problems on computer b, same on both drives:
Installation hung on "apt" for a long time then completed installation.

When attempting to edit "sources.list" there were several instances of the line
Quote:
# Line commented out by installer because it failed to varify:
I went ahead and removed the "#" from several of the items anyway.

On running "sudo ape-get update" I got a lot of "could not connect to security.ubuntu..,..." messages.

No problem connecting to internet
No problem with "xorg.conf"

I tried a very old (6 gig) drive and installation when ok.

Any help would be most appreciated

I did a complete re-install on my work laptop at 9am GMT, got the updates done by 10am.
Think I was very lucky as I've seen nothing of the Ubuntu main sites or forums since midday.

Hell of a breakdown, but these things happen from time-to-time.
