Ubuntu add-on apps

I open the add applications set up. Some of them are checked (these are already installed), and the others I would like to install but when I select them a msg says something like "this app may not run on this distro". I'd very much like to have some of these apps. What's going on? You mean I can't use these at all on Ubuntu 6.06.1?

I dont' usually use the Add/Remove programs function you're speaking, but I just installed a couple programs from there just to try it, and all went fine.

Have you tried looking for whatever you want in the repositories?

System>Administration>Synaptic Package Mgr Search the repositories, and see if it contains what you want, and install from there. If you don't see what you want, in the Synaptic Package Mgr, click Tools>Repositories. Make sure all the boxes are checked. Click OK. Synaptic will reload, then search again. I've always found installing from Synaptic pretty easy, so I just use it, and most likely whatever you're looking for, is there.
