Ubuntu 9.10 wallpaper or graphics card problem

Hello all;

I have been reading the latest posts related to Ubuntu 9.10 and its error with graphics cards.
I have an ATI Radeon 9200 SE win 128 MB RAM, and I am having a problem I have not had in previons versions of Ubuntu.
I installed the new 9.10 version from the CD formatting the partition. Everything went of in the instalation, but now when I start Ubuntu, I get it to run, and I can see both Gnome bars, but I can not see the wallpaper or the icons in the desktop, the system seems to run, but the screen can not display the wallpaper or icons. If I open some window from the menu, it also works.

Is anyone suffering these problems? Does it have anything to do with my graphics card?

Thank you all in advance,
best regards,

Alberto

I'm not sure what's causing that, but I can assure you that it's very unlikely to have anything to do with your video card.

Ubuntu 9.10 + Black background

Hello,

I would like to add that I have the same exact issue. I have done an upgrade and a clean install and in both situations have got the same issue. I neither can see the icons no the background. I have disabled the special effects then everything back to normal. But this is not a solution I was looking for.

I belive that there should be a bug causing this problem. I have tested Ubuntu 9.10 on a AMD Athlon XP+ solo processor and a IBM Lenovo laptop centrino duo core. Both the same issue.

Hope you have a soution for.

PS reinstallation of the driver didn't solve the problem.

Regards,

Runner69

Thank you very much, so if there are more case, surely it is a bug. I donīt really mind about special effects, but what you have said about the driver, makes me think.
Does this mean that my graphics card is no longer supported? I thought ATI radeon 9200 card where already working with a free driver available.
Have I lost 3D acceleration?

Thank you in advance,

Alberto

The 9200 is definitely supported by the open source driver. What is the output of 'glxinfo -l'?

Hello;

If I disable 3D effects and set it to none, everything appears to work fine. 3D effects have been working ok in ubuntu 8.04, 9.10 and 9.04, why it is giving problems now? Could it be possible to rport this error to Canonical?

The output of "glxinfo -l" is below. Can anyone see anything strange?

I am sure that ATI Radeion is supported. But I do not have found the solution yet and hoped that you someone could help me too. I reinstalled ubuntu 9.04 again for now in order to be able to continue with my work.

My previous respond was based on the request "If someone else has the same issue."

I hope that I have not mislead anyone.

altella, your drivers definitely appear to be installed properly, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Possibly a bug with gnome or the video card driver.

I also have had the same problem with both my laptop and desktop systems. Laptop is a running upgrade from 9.10 a-6 thru beta and rc and desktop is a fresh install of 9.10 final. Clicking on >System>Prefs>Appearance and setting Visual Effects to NONE brought the wallpaper back to normal. Everything else seems to be working on both without further hiccups.

For the record - I have same problem. Have an ATI Radeon 9200 also (see:
*-display:0 UNCLAIMED
description: VGA compatible controller
product: RV280 [Radeon 9200]
vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0

and just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10.

Two days ago, upgraded a different machine (don't have access to it right now, so don't know the video chipset) and no such problem.

Seems to be 9200 related?
