If you go to: system > preferences > themes, you will see a number of different themes if (like most people) you don't like the "human" brown theme.

To install themes from gnome-look.org, you can download a theme and extract it, then drag it to the system > preferences > themes window as described here:
http://webupd8.blogspot.com/2009/03/...ld-compiz.html
and here:
http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/1...in-ubuntu-810/
You can also move the theme to /usr/share/themes as described here for system wide access for all users:
http://www.ubuntu-unleashed.com/2008...-theme-in.html
The themes can also be copied to ~/.themes for just a per user access.
Some themes come with their own installer as described here:
http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2008/11/...on-ubuntu-810/
You may find that some of those themes on gnome-look.org work better than others.

Open any nautilus window, like your home directory for example. Click on: edit > preferences. On the view tab, use the icon view defaults drop down box to adjust the size of icons. There are many other things you can adjust from the preferences window by clicking on the tabs at the top.
