Ubuntu 8.04 Repository problems.
 

I've installed a fresh copy of Hardy Heron on my laptop but when ever I try to update the software sources the gui shows a 5 or 6 hits and 7 failures then it just sits there for five minutes before it picks back up and starts downloading the other packages. Is there a problem with Hardy's repositories not being where they're supposed to be? I've not received a single update from my update manager since I installed this version so there is no way for me to fix the problems I've found so far like the lack of the "Sudo" command. When ever I try to sudo into a command I get "sudo: unable to resolve host" Has anyone else experienced these problems?

Ubuntu Hardy was just released a couple of days ago, give it a week for the servers to get un-busy with all the people downloading the new release...

and one more thing, about that "sudo: unable to resolve host" change the host name of your PC to localhost

Changing the name of my PC back to localhost worked. Thanks for the information. I'm not trying to dump on Ubuntu about there product. I'm trying to make sure I'm not the only one having trouble with Hardy failing the first 7 or 8 repository checks. I have this sneaky feeling that plenty of updates are out there but I'm not able to see them. I'd also like to know why my laptop recognizes the 2.5GB of ram I have but Ubuntu only see the 2GB. Does anyone know why this is?

I did an upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 two nights ago. Everything seemed to be fine, until I opened Network Manager...then all hell broke loose. It gave me a hard time setting up my network, because sudo commands don't work. For some reason, the upgrade renamed me to some dotster.com nonsense, and using gedit is not an option to fix the problem. I've also tried to Hotwire it, but it ignores me in the booting sequence, so that's out. I was pretty excited about this upgrade, and it fixed a lot of issues I had with 7.10 but in end, not being able to root in, is kicking my ass. I'm locked out as a normal user, and root is now in the hands of the laptop and the Ubuntu program. Any ideas on how I can circumvent this problem?

If you hop over to the ubuntu forums you'll find many people experiencing problems after an "upgrade" to 8.04
The solution seems to be a fresh install.
Maybe you can get back in with ssh, from another computer, or booting to single-user mode, or booting a live CD, to rescue your personal data before you reinstall.
