Post Ubuntu 8.04 Installation: Grub Error no15

Hello

I have tried to install Hardy Heron on a separate partition inside the windows using the wbui installer provided with the CD (obtained through ShipIt- thank you). As I try to boot into Ubuntu I get an error message GRUB Load Error No 15, File not found.

I have also tried to do a clean install Ubuntu 8.04 in the same partition, but in that case I got "GRUB Error no. 17, unable to mount the disc".

My system specs are as follows:

There are three HDDs. Two SATAII, one of 160GB (four partitions including Windows- C: drive- all NTFS) and the other 500GB (Four partitions- all NTFS) and the third one is IDE 80 GB. I installed (or tried to install that is) Hardy on the 80GB IDE HDD which have two partitions, both NTFS. I used the first partition in the 80GB HDD for Ubuntu 8.04 installation.

It is very much necessary for me to install and run Ubuntu successfully, as I need to install Edubuntu ASAP. And from this release onwards Edubuntu needs Ubuntu 8.04 as base system.

Please help me out.

Thank you.

Did you try to format the partition you want to use for ubuntu as ext3?
I'm not sure whether ubuntu can boot from a ntfs partition.

I have done a fresh install formatting the partition to ext3, and now I am getting ERROR 22

It seems that 8.04 is a really buggy release :|

I suppose it's a grub error message?
Grub error 22 menas, that grub doesn't find the partition. Do you boot into ubuntu from windows or do you reboot your computer? if the second applies, can you boot into windows?

LOL, yeah, Ubuntu 8.04 is a buggy release. 1000's of people have no problem at all installing it, you have trouble, so its a buggy release. What it sounds like, is you don't know what a bug is.

Sounds like there's something wrong w/ how YOU setup your partitions. I'd second the questions above, are you able to get to Windows, if so, how? That error typically stops booting the machine. I'm assuming with that error, you're not getting a grub menu at all. These links might help...

While you've not lost grub after reinstalling windows, you an follow the instructions and try to reinstall grub.
