Ubuntu 704 and widescreen support

I've recently installed the feisty release and when i choose a resolution of 1440x900 i get this:

It looks quite ugly.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Wow are you 100% certain that resolution is supported, and have you tried with some other resolution of the same relation (like 1280x800 for example)?

Then my next questions would be..are you using an appropriate display driver (nv for nvidia cards, ati for ati cards or fglrx for those that it supports, sis for sis chipsets, ...) instead of something more generic?

That does look quite ugly. I'm having no problems with a resolution like that (ratio 1,6) with Feisty, and have never had with Ubuntu. So..I would guess it's hardware-specific or driver-specific.

Yeeah it's fully supported, it's my monitor nativer resolution. I always set it at Windows and other Distros.

I don't know wich driver i'm using It's a default Ubuntu 704 setup...

I can set lower resolutions without a problem, wich I'm sure is ATI-specific

EDIT

Uhm, i've solved it modifying xorg.conf =)

Regardless to what resolution you have selected the driver will determine if it can use it. If not, the standard drivers default to a resolution it knows it can use. The correct driver for your card is very important. Could you provide your monitor brand and model #? Also bring up a terminal window and run "lspci |grep VGA" so we can see the detected video card. A copy of /etc/X11/xorg.conf would also be helpful.
