Unhappy Ubuntu 6.10 install screen wont load from boot cd.

Hi all,

I downloaded the normal ubuntu (for the standard personal computer) 6.10 today.

Problem: When I try and use the cd to install ubuntu it goes to load /vmlinux and /intrid.gz and then the screen goes blank all except for a hyphen character "-" that blinks. Nothing happens past that point.

Attempts to resolve problems: I know the cd works as ive tested and its not corrupt. I have also tried the install on another machine and that works fine.

I have tried booting the cd with my nvidia 6600 on analog and digital. I also did this with the built in graphics card. But I get the same problems.

I also tried starting the install in the VGA safe mode. But I get the same problem.

I have also tried another ubuntu cd 6.06 that I used to install on the machine previously and I get the same problem.

I am out of ideas.

If anyone can think of something that might fix the problem or if you have a fix for the problem please tell me.

Cheers,

-Tiepo

Have you tried some other Linux distribution like Knoppix or DSL? I suspect there are some unsupported component on your system (with the problem coming so early probably your CD-Rom controller).

I checked the md5 sum and I can install slackware 10.2 on the computer.

*EDIT*

I have now installed the dvd rom drive from my other computer which it works with and I get the same problem...

Could you see in your technical documentation what IDE/SATA controller you have (mainboard manual) and then check if it is supported by Linux. This is likely to be the problem.
