Unhappy Ubuntu 6.06 64-bit shutdown problem

I've tried Ubuntu 6.06 live CD. The sound (Intel HDA) is now working. I have sound problems from the previous version of Ubuntu (i.e., 5.10). However I still have shutdown problems. I've also tried SUSE 10.1 Live-CD and I haven't experienced any shutdown problem.

When shutting down from GNOME, the screen just turns black and shows two small ugly white squares on the screen. I've also tried "halt" and "shutdown" to shutdown ubuntu, but it won't. It just shows a lot of messages, hexadecimals scrolling and displays "Unable to handle kernel paging request".

anyway, below is my computer specs:

CPU: Intel 4 64-bit
Motherboard: ASUS P5GL-MX
Sound: Intel HDA
Video: Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family (from windows device manager)

How will I fix this in Ubuntu? Actually, I have not yet installed Ubuntu at the moment. I want to make sure that there is a work around for my problem before installing it.

i added acpi=off as a boot parameter before booting the live cd.
There was no shutdown problem when i tried to log-off from GNOME. Except that it didn't shutdown automatically. I have to manually press the power button on the CPU. Any ideas?
