Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Gnome tab does not auto-complete how to fix?

So when using tab to auto-complete in the terminal (GUI) it will either take 30+ seconds to complete the file name, if and only if I am in that exact directory, but if I am attempting to auto-complete tab a file or path other than my current location it just dongs at me and refuses to even give a display of options to complete.

How do I fix this?

What info do you need from me so I can help you help me?

Thank you in advance.

Are you sure gnome-terminal is to blame? Have you tried it in other terminals (urxvt, xterm)?

^ yes, that.
The usual stuff... do you get the impression that your system is very busy during these 30s? Can you make out what happens with the help of a system monitor of your choice (e.g. 'top')?
Search you package management command line program for packages containing the term "completion". Possibly something there you don't need, and can uninstall?

If some part of bash completion is going through network drives or very slow hard drives (USB?) etc. it can get slow.

On my 10-year-old 32bit laptop bash completion is also slow - but not that slow.

I have not tried other GUI terminals, but it has the same types of issues even when I ssh into that laptop.

I just installed Pop!_OS on my workstation, much newer much more powerful, and it does not have the same performance issues.

For now I will put it down to an old laptop. As to how busy the system is, looking at htop I have the same performance when my system is near idle and when the system is near max performance.

Thank you both for your time.
