Ubuntu 19.04 - Gnome Xorg session keeps logging out - Login loop

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 19.04 and the system goes into an infinite login loop whenever I try to log in to Gnome Xorg session. I don't know whether it is related to the driver or not but I did a fresh install and while Wayland session now works, unfortunately Xorg doesn't still. I have installed the latest NVidia drivers as well as the Nvidia Prime program to switch graphics cards but neither works. I just keep dumped back to the login screen when trying to log in to Xorg session.

Tried reconfiguring using the nvidia-xconfig tool but still doesn't work. Wayland works well though, but I play some games on steam and also I need to use pen tablet, which don't work on Wayland.

Can anybody point out anything obvious that could be wrong here? I usually never had problems with Xorg before this upgrade.

Since you've been a member of this forum for many years, you've probably come across many threads where users were advised to *NOT* perform in-place upgrades, but to do fresh installs. Things like this are the reasons why.

Good to know. Gnome is 3.32 on Ubuntu 19.04, and 3.30 on Debian 9.9...some differences. And given your past behavior, it's surprising you even posted here:

I clarify, I did a fresh install after upgrading initially. While after the regular upgrade, Gnome went into an infinite login loop whether I used Wayland or XOrg when I reinstalled afresh I got the same issue, but only with XOrg.

But I require XOrg because I use Nvidia drivers and Steam games wouldn't work on Wayland. Also I use the evdev driver for my pen tablet (libinput doesn't recognize the tablet at all).

Gnome 3.32 is probably having difficulty with the Nvidia driver. Not sure of the issue, but I ruled out Gnome as the problem since it worked well on Wayland. Didn't bother trying an older version of the Nvidia driver, since it failed when I used the integrated Intel graphics mode as well (using nvidia-prime).

Probably will continue using Debian stable for the time being, since I am used to things that worked and continues to work well.

Also thanks for the warm welcome back I am not really a regular on online forums any more, but I posted this because I was stumped on this issue and google didn't really help (most of the issues seemed to be about disabling gnome extensions which wasn't the root cause of my issue)

Guess this tutorial about how to install Ubuntu 19, nVidia and resolving the Steam issue doesn't work???

Since you don't say what 'pen tablet' you're using, hard to say what to do. But there are most probably drivers for it, but since there's no details, its hard to say.

I use this one:

I guess the evdev driver supports it out of the box, since it works with pressure sensitivity.

Also I had forgotten all about that old thread. It's been more than 4 years since I posted here. I guess I did lose my temper at the time. No hard feelings, and I apologize now, and hope we can move on.

And the temper-tantrum before that, where you stormed off and deleted a bunch of your posts??? Based on your past behavior, when someone disagrees with you, you rant, rave and insult folks. Adults need to act like adults.

I agree, but it's a long time ago now and I've changed as a person also. I hope you will also move on.

I certainly have not come here to disturb you. But you seem keen on digging up my posts from years ago. I ignored the first few jibes but I have no option but to report your posts now. I have not broken any rules now and didn’t trouble you in any way so kindly leave my posts alone. I have apologized for such posts of mine and I think you should also let it go.

Again, as before, report whatever you wish. You posted a 'question', only to post a solution right after it. You were then helped with drivers for your tablet, and with a tutorial on how to get nVidia working with Steam on Ubuntu, something you said wouldn't work. Odd how you don't bother addressing those replies, or even acknowledge them.

If you have an actual question or problem, please feel free to post it, but don't think that myself (or ANYONE else) can't go back and look at your past posts. Again, your behavior in the past doesn't lead folks to want to assist you. Based your previous tantrums, tirades, cursing (which moderators removed), and mass post-deletions (which again, moderators had to step in for), nothing you say here about 'changing', being a 'different person', etc., rings very true, since you've done it before. And the fact you're now saying you 'must' report a post doesn't indicate you're any different than before.

I really don’t know what problem you have with me now. My apology was sincere and it is true that I forgot a lot about my earlier stint in LQ. I came only to ask a genuine question but I decided after the question that it would be simpler to install Debian. So marked this thread solved in the interest of not wasting others’ time. I also appreciate your pointers. But I am surprised at why you would want to keep linking to my old posts of several years ago and why you feel so strongly about it now. I felt the same was borderline harassment and reported it accordingly. I have no personal grudge against you. Let moderator decide on this. I am not interested in your analysis of me.

Sorry, but did you not read what you posted??? How, exactly, do you THINK people will treat you when you post things like:
  • I've had enough of the lot of you...
  • I didn't ask for your worthless advice. So put a sock on it and keep your [Mod-Edit] views to yourself. I know how to keep my job. Don't worry about it.
  • I don't give a damn if my views get me banned. This forum is a patholgical case. But TB0ne you are a [Mod-Edit] IT Person asshole who has no life and spends time giving worthless advise to others. [Mod-Edit].
...among others.

Nor am I interested in yours. You posted in a public forum...if you're embarrassed by your past actions, then perhaps you should have acted better. No one is to blame for your actions but you. Your apologies certainly don't seem sincere since, as noted, you've done it before, yet your behavior continued. Seems you want folks to just forget your actions, but you'll still play the "harassment" and "I'll report you" cards just as you did before, right? Not much different.

Want to move on? Then do it.

Yes, I do want to move on. But apparently you don't want me to. I have sincerely apologized and if you chose not to believe me that's your problem. I don't believe in denial, but I genuinely have forgotten stuff.

I don't live in LQ and a lot of stuff in my life is beyond LQ. So it is only natural that in a gap of 4+ years, my memory regarding these issues is very vague at best (until you had linked the post).

But again, let me say that, regardless of how I may have posted in the past (and I must say that the moderators had issued infraction for that so I have, in a way faced the consequences), that doesn't justify your repeated linking of my past posts without any provocation from my side and it constitutes harassment in my book and though I cannot stop you from doing it, I will report it as I see fit. Again, I leave it to the wisdom of the moderators.

But leaving the past aside for a moment, I don't even know who you are personally and I can only say again that I have no hard feelings and I genuinely hope that you will accept my apology.
