The problem is solved by installing new kernel.
Find the stable kernel at kernel.org
Now goto here and download the following files in this order.
linux-headers-..._all.deb
linux-headers-...i386.deb (or linux-headers-...amd64.deb for 64 bit)
linux-modules-...i386.deb(or linux-modules-...i386.deb for 64bit)
linux-image-...i386.deb (or linux-image-...amd64.deb for 64 bit)

Now just run these files in order by just double clicking it or in terminal type the following command.

sudo dpkg -i PACKAGE_NAME.deb

if you get error installing the kernel due to virtualbox just remove the virtualbox and try again.
After installing the kernel

reboot

and install virtualbox again
