Ubuntu 13.04 hangs on boot

I'm using 64-bit Ubuntu 13.04 (kernel 3.8.0-19-generic) when I try a normal boot after install it sits at a blank flashing cursor.
When booting into the recovery mode it get as far as

witching to clocksource tsc
usb 2-1: new high speed USB device usng ehci_hcd and address 2
hub 1-1:1.0: USB hub found
hub 1-1:1.0: 6 ports detected
Refied TSC clocksource caliration: 3492.066 MHz.
Switching to clocksource tsc
usb 2-1: new high speed USB device using ehci-hcd and address 2
hub 2-1:1.0: USB hub found
hub 2-1:1.0: 6 ports detected
usb 1-1.6: new low speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3

At first I thought it was a problem with one of the usb peipherals but this consistently occurs regardless of what I have plugged in. I've even tried unplugging my keyboard before it gets to this point (with nothing else plugged in) and it still hangs at this point.

Eventually I get a kernel crash, the last line is:
[ 240.969796] [<c100367e>] ? kernel_thread_helper+0x6/0x10

Do you have a problem with any other distro?

You definitely have a problem with modesetting.

What options are you using in 'recovery mode'?

Other distros are fine, as is running it from a USB stick.

Looking at the grub command, the line beginning 'linux' reads

/boot/vmlinuz-3.8.0-19-generic root=uuid<uuid> ro recovery nomodeset

Edit: the normal (non-recovery mode) kernel line doesn't have a nomodeset parameter but adding one doesn't make any difference.

Edit2: I installed the 32-bit desktop version and that worked without issue.

It is necessary to understand that your hardware supports 64 bit or not.

find lm in flags, if it is there it means it supports 64 bit

Quote:
$ grep flags /proc/cpuinfo | grep " lm "
Another way is, Run

Quote:
$ lshw -C processor | grep width
If width is 64 bit, it means it supports 64 bit OS
