Ubuntu 12.10 crashing
Hello everyone
I have been using Ubuntu for about 6 years and have just updated to 12.10. I have always found this very stable, but not so now. I have multiple crashes every time I use my computer, both using Firefox and when I'm just accessing files on my computer. I'm no Lynix expert, so any ideas have to be simple. I loaded 12.10 on line (I previously had 11.08). When it was installing I noticed it said the mirror drive (?) was not found, but everything otherwise went fine. I have thought of reinstalling from CD (which I don't have) but am not sure if I can do this when the system is already loaded. Any ideas/ help would be appreciated. My laptop is about 5 years old but in all respects it has been OK and relatively fast. |
Please see Ubuntu's Upgrade Notes. You may have inadvertently "skipped" an upgrade step.

Hi
Thanks for replying. In fact I got my post wrong- I updated from 12.04 to 12.10. Your comment about an old computer may be relevent. Sally |
If your laptop ran successfully with Ubuntu 12.04, I would think that it would work with 12.10. The concern is with Ubuntu 11.xx were the Unity interface was introduced.
Since posting I ran across this article: Ubuntu 12.10 – Should you Upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10? There may be insights in it for you. |
Hi Patholeg. I am seeing the same thing on two of my computers. And as I google around, I see other posts in various forums by people who are experiencing similar issues. They are reporting crashes in recent installs of Linux (not just Ubuntu) even though it all worked fine with older versions. Even after doing a full reinstall, the problem returns.
And now I think I know why. This article tipped me off: http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20121105#qa After I moved to XFS, all was fine. It's rock solid again. You might want to give this a try. best regards, Oz Quote:

Hi Oz
That article is really interesting. I too have noticed posts elsewhere about Ubuntu crashing. Your suggestion is too complex for me to handle and in the absence of anything better I plan to reload 12.04 ( I know I will have to reformat my hard drive). Thanks for your help. Sally |
