Ubuntu 12.04 boots into command line/ grub rescue

I attempted to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop. It worked fine at first. I was able to install additional drivers and all the updates. But when I restarted the system I either get to the gui and go to Ubuntu in which nothing more than a command line appears or I get sent to a screen that says there's an error saying "grub rescue>"

I've followed the directions from this guide to no avail.

I can't even get into Windows anymore. I'm really lost with this.
