Hi, I read a lot of good reviews on the this new build and decided to upgrade. I opted to wipe my root and swap partition and maintain my /home. Now I am noticing my system much slower than 11.04. There shouldn't be any issues around hardware resources. I have 6 gig ram, and quad core.ntel® Core i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz × 8.
I am also finding that on log in Unity loads the username field off center on the screen.
It seems Firefox is more sluggish loading from page to page than the apps. I know, you might say it's network issue but it was quite responsive in 11.04. Also when use mouse right click to get undo or paste options, there is a couple of seconds before I get the options menu. Thats a Unity issue...?
I am having to revisit this thead. Having used this build five hours I am finding sluggish after all. There is definitely taxing the hardware resources in some way even though I should have plenty. I could have rythem box playing music in the background when I click on a word document the music jumps/freezes for a few seconds. I am also finding when working in Officer Writer there is a lag using the back space to delete text.
Does anyone have any ideas what's going on or how to resolve it?
My graphics card is the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M 1GB GDDR3
Initially I used the first card on this list. The past hour I have been using the third (recommended) but have not noticed any difference. The login dialog box is still off center.
Another annoying behavior is when I am listening to streaming radio and the system logs me out after five minutes. That is even though I set the power management NOT to require login. In 11.04 I was able to go into system preferences and adjust power management accordingly. Here I have find power management seperately But it does not work in any case... It's looking like Unity aint all it's cracked up to be....

I don't see anything unusual in your top output that could explain the sluggishness. Apparently, your CPU is not being taxed. Could you run this again when your system is behaving particularly sluggishly?
I'm sorry, but I am not familiar with nVIDIA cards and drivers on Ubuntu. I did have quite a problem with an ATI (different card from yours) driver that produced some of the same symptoms of sluggishness that you are having. I hope someone who has experience with nVIDIA drivers will come along.
What do you mean when you say that the login dialog box is off center? Mine is located on the left of my screen. Do you mean off center in the up/down direction?
About it logging you out ... I'm guessing that you mean that the screen locks and you have to re-enter your password to resume using the system. Is that right? If that is what you mean by logging you out then I can help you with this.
Yes, the when I am not using the computer it logs me out which under 11.04 was managed using power management. With 12.04 I don't know how to adjust it. And yes, my log in dialog box is to the left of my screen. Normally I would expect it to be dead center.
When it logs out it kills any streaming radio or TV. I sream radion when taking a break from my work.

Hmmm. I don't understand it logging you completely out. Try System Settings ---> Brightness and Lock and turn off the lock. Also set the "Turn screen off when inactive" to "never."
But if the screen were just blanking, it should not interrupt music playing. I have never had Ubuntu actually log me out. By logging out you mean actually getting the login screen that you get when you boot up the computer? Or do you mean that the screen blanks and requires a password to resume? Or do you mean that it goes to suspend?
Yes, it seems Unity has completely changes gnomes system preferences. The brightness option does switch the dimming. But Not the ocassional logout or crashes. I have included some screenshots describing a recent crash.
