Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and KDE 4.8.5 freezes on HP Pavillion DV6000 Laptop

I am running KDE version 4.8.5 and Ubuntu 12.04 on an HP Pavillion DV6000 laptop and it continually freezes (several times daily). When it freezes the mouse still works but the rest of the GUI is dead. I try to do a CTRL-ALT-F1 etc and nothing works. I am curious if this is hardware related or software related. How can I check various logs to see what is causing the lockup? I am tempted to just format and re-install the OS but I would much rather try and figure out what the issue is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
